Understanding Different Learning Styles for Special Needs Individuals

Every individual learns differently, and as educators, we must identify and approach their educational needs with individualized, valuable learning styles. This is no different for individuals with special needs. Involving different kinds of styles can improve their overall comprehension. A multisensory, multi-faceted strategy to special needs learning can be effective for those who process information differently both neurologically and physically.

At Gompers, we’re committed to providing support to increase the independence and quality of life of individuals with disabilities. Our services are designed to meet the unique needs and opportunities of each one of our members. Our research-based, special education programs incorporate several different learning styles to ensure your child reaches their full potential.

Verbal Learning Style

Verbal learners prefer using words to assist in their education. Whether it is in speech or writing, verbal learning styles help these students comprehend a variety of subjects. Additionally, verbal learners do very well in note-taking and writing assignments. According to Cornerstone University, it’s a good idea to have students rewrite information into their own words. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to provide them with written handouts with the concepts you’re educating them on to review.

Visual Learning Style

Many students benefit more from visual learning strategies rather than verbal lessons. Pictures, images, diagrams, and maps are just a few visual items that these individuals benefit tremendously from. Studies show that visual learning helps differently-abled children reduce anxiety, resistance to change and social isolation while improving their motivation and understanding..

Physical Learning Style

Students who are more sensitive to the physical world around them benefit from kinesthetic learning approaches. They appreciate textures, making models, working out jigsaw puzzles, and likely enjoy sports and exercise. To educate those who prefer this type of learning style, it’s important to incorporate physical elements into the lesson. This may involve touch, action, movement, and other hands-on learning activities. Most importantly, using physical objects is the most effective way to educate these students.

Auditory Learning Style

Students who excel in lessons that involve auditory learning styles typically like to work with sound and music. It has a strong effect on our emotions and comprehension of certain subjects. Audio can be a powerful tool and its benefits are tremendous for special needs students. To wield this powerful educational tool, educators need to incorporate sounds, rhymes, and music in their learning. Not to mention, it may be beneficial to use sound recordings to provide a background and help students visualize the subject.

Social Learning Style

Special needs individuals do not need to learn alone. There are several individuals who actually prefer to engage with fellow students to understand their curriculum. Lessons that incorporate group activities and discussions see student growth in social and academic engagement. Additionally, this learning style influences students’ attention, motivation, retention, and reproduction.
